Claes Oldenburg

b. 1929

Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929) is a Swedish-born American sculptor best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects. He grew up in Chicago, after moving to the United States from Stockholm as a child. Oldenburg studied art history at Yale University before training at the Art Institute of Chicago. Oldenburg then established a studio in New York in 1956.
Oldenburg is known for his innovative and humorous reconstructions of everyday objects, both as large-scale public installations and “soft” deflated sculptures. Along with Tom Wesselmann, Jasper Johns, and Allan Kaprow, Oldenburg is associated with the Pop Art movement. His early shows featured objects assembled with images, papier mâché, and plaster. By the 1970s, Oldenburg focused his attention on monumental outdoor public sculpture of everyday objects, creating Free Stamp in Cleveland and Clothespin in Philadelphia. Oldenburg often collaborated with his wife, artist Coosje van Bruggen, until her death in 2009.
The artist continues to live and work in New York. Today, his works are included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Kunstmuseum Basel, among others.
