The figure’s deconstructed face erupts from the floral volcano body, as the shadow of an equal sign looms in the background. With patchwork patterns and layered fabrics, the abstract face of the figure in Amira Brown’s Untitled confronts the viewer, complicating a traditionally straightforward relationship between subject and viewer. The unbalanced eyes and jagged embroidery challenge conventional understandings of what constitutes a portrait. Untitled redefines portraiture by featuring the suggestion of a human face atop a volcano-like figure. The face and mind erupt from the body, which appears to represent the Black body. Brown reveals the disconnect between the body and the psyche, a technique utilized by both Black artists and women artists to represent the separation of body and deeper identity. ~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern.
