Hegemony is one of Emmanuel Laflamme’s most iconic artworks, revealing the collective unconscious of contemporary society by playfully juxtaposing references from pop culture. Laflamme’s collage blurs the boundaries between high and low culture, inheriting the quests of Dadaism, Surrealism, and the Pop Art movement. Here, the juxtaposition of the five UFOs and a memorable scene from Jaws, the classic movie from the 70s, provides strong visual appeal. At the same time, the white scribble lines that highlight the children’s heads and eyes make the ubiquitous image somewhat uncanny. This twist turns the entertaining elements in the artwork into a profound question: what are the fears human beings share in daily life? The subject matter of catastrophe and the strategies of appropriating and remixing remind the viewers of Andy Warhol’s silkscreen paintings of the Death and Disaster series. When Laflamme released a former version of Hegemony on the social networking platform Tumblr in 2011, the image went viral soon thereafter. In the following years, the artist kept exploring Hegemony with different mediums. Launched in November 2020, Laflamme's installation artwork GOOD FEAR, commissioned by L’Avenue du Mont-Royal in Montreal, Canada, was an extension and transformation of Hegemony. ~ An-Ru Chu, Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Art Market Studies.
