Helen Gerardia was a Russian American artist who studied under Hans Hoffman, featured in the Smithsonian and other American museums. Flight uses non-objective representations of abstract expressionism from Hoffman’s influence, but with a geometric approach and a title that suggests movement. In comparison to Gerardia’s other works, Flight is a simple and strong composition. Some viewers may be reminded of the studies Carmen Herrera created before her larger scale paintings. The shapes call to mind a folded airplane, inviting viewers to imagine the shapes just floating off the page and flying away. As Flight is a lithograph, it does not share the enormity and traditional movement of paint often seen in abstract expressionist works. However, the striking contrast of colors highlight the drama of traditional abstract expressionist movement. The strength in Gerardia’s Flight challenges viewers’ traditional notions of abstract expressionist work and blurs the lines of abstraction and minimalism. ~ Evie Adsetts, Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Art Market Studies.
