Marc Salz’s imagery, presenting “embryonic shapes that belong to an archaic world existing beneath this modern surface,” joins with an expression of multiculturalism in Other Languages. One in a series of six watercolors serving as a tribute to immigrants and immigration, the work’s variety of colors, shapes, and symbols are arranged in seemingly random order. However, their arrangement is intentional. The cool blue background, rounded central shape, and the fluid motions of the symbols within the scattered squares evoke a sense of the elements not uncommon to Salz’s work. The central element is water. The monochrome background unites the initially disparate colors, shapes, and symbols in the work, perhaps suggesting the sociocultural intermingling of immigrants. The composition may portray the multicultural world itself, creating a cohesive whole out of many distinct parts. The colors—simultaneously complementary and contrasting—evoke the nature of a world enriched by immigrants. ~ David Jenkins, J.D.
