Description

Beatrix POTTER (1866-1943).

The Tale of Benjamin Bunny. New York: [Schlueter Printing Company for] Frederick Warne &Co., 36 East 22nd Street, [1904]. 12mo. Title vignette and 27 color illustrations, Schlueter imprint on p.[86]. Original light brown paper-covered boards, lettering on upper cover and spine printed in dark green, upper cover with inset oval colored illustration, Linder 2 & 3 endpapers at front and rear (bumps and rubbing to extremities). Provenance: Douglas Clark Midgley of New Jersey (inscription ‘To Douglas / from / Aunt Mabel / Birthday 1906’).  First American Edition,  with Schlueter's imprint on p. [86], ''Muffetees'' is wrongly spelt ''Muffatees'' on page 15, with the following blank pages: 12-13, 18-19, 24-25, 30-31, 36-37, 42-43, 48-49, 54-55, 60-61, 66-67, 72-73, 78-79, 82-83 (small tear to back end paper). Endpapers are Linder 2 & 3 (used twice).

[with:] three early US editions of other titles, all issued from Warne’s 36 East 22nd Street address and all printed by Schlueter, with their imprint.

The Taylor of Gloucester (Linder endpapers 2 & 4  twice, inscription dated 29 Oct. 1909); The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (Linder endpapers 2 & 4  twice, inscription dated 29 Oct. 1907); The Tale of Jeremy Fisher (Linder endpapers 2 & 4  twice, inscription dated 25 Dec. 1907).

All four stories were given to Douglas Clark MIDGLEY (29 Oct 1902- 1 Feb 1977) between 1906 and 1909, either as Christmas or Birthday presents. (4)
