Lot 27
A Pair of Asian Bronze Foo Dogs (19th/20th Century)
Description
A matching pair of Chinese export cast bronze guardian lions (foo dogs) sculpted in seated postures with dynamically coiled manes and stylized alert countenances, the male figure stabilizing a front paw over a large openwork geometric brocade sphere and the female figure leaning forward over a separate miniature rolling sphere accent, both animals designed with open roaring mouths, projecting flame-form stylized ears, and heavily sectioned sweeping tails rising behind their backs
Details
Bronze
each: 7 1/2 x 12 x 4 1/2 inches
Provenance
The Estate of Janice and Donald Rosenthal
Condition
Good condition; a prominent circular metal patch or casting plug inserted during the manufacturing process visible on the lower lateral flank of one figure, a naturally aged and rubbed dark brown metal surface with minor superficial scuffs along the high points of the manes, and expected hollow open undersides revealing typical historical shelf wear along the raw contact rims
