Starry Journey is a terra cotta statuette, a solitary human figure on a pedestal as if suspended in space. The nature of the work calls to mind the philosophers’ stones displayed to make the viewer get lost in the patterns and lines. Executed in the typical Ney manner, the statuette is marked by a pattern of incisions and indentations, which successfully create a call and response effect with the marble pedestal that supports the slightly hunched figure. It is unclear whether the work has an intended front or back. The artist thus creates an ambivalent, almost philosophical, effect for the viewer who cannot be sure whether the figure is approaching or receding. ~ Irina Tarsis, Founder and Managing Director, Center for Art Law.
