Reminiscent of a Pablo Picasso cubist portrait, Andre Pace’s Artist Jury/Man speaks to the experience of the artist. The figure is split down the middle forming two distinct, competing halves of the body, personality, and identity. The halves coexist, and do so well enough to form a recognizable human face, though the figure’s body is contorted. Thus, Pace emphasizes the split mind of an artist, while simultaneously suggesting that the body facilitates that divide. By jury, Pace suggests that artists have the weight of posterity on their shoulders, and they act as full juries when determining their artistic output. ~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern.
