Family Business/I'll cook tonight blends the artistic traditions associated with Basquiat and Pace’s stated muses, El Greco, Homer, and Sargent. The colorful abstraction and figures pay homage to Basquiat, while the structure and subject matter allude to more traditional masters. The family, lounging in their sitting room or kitchen, engage in the familial activity of cooking together. The figures in the foreground add character to the composition by exposing the happy chaos associated with group cooking. The image of the family together relies on the artistic traditions of the 19th-century. Yet, the contemporary family cooks for themselves as they wrangle their children. Thus, Pace combines artistic traditions with a contemporary flare, creating a piece that speaks to the timelessness of family while highlighting the progress of the family unit. ~ Lucy Siegel, Student at Bowdoin College, Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Government and Legal Studies, Center for Art Law Summer 2020 Intern.
