Drawings for the Bible by Marc Chagall text by Gaston Bachelard [translated by Stuart Gilbert]. New York: published by Harcourt, Brace & Co., [printed in Paris, France, 1960]. Large quarto (14 x 10 3/8in; 356 x 263mm).  24 original color lithographs after Chagall, printed by Mourlot freres, 96 uncolored illustrations by Draeger freres. Original boards with an all-over color lithographed design after Chagall, printed by Mourlot (no dust-jacket; extremities slightly rubbed, repair to head to backstrip [see images]).

A nice copy of the First American edition of Chagall’s famous suite of Biblical drawings from 1958-1959. His first set on a similar theme were published in Verve vol.VIII, #33/34 in 1956, and the present second set were first published in Verve vol.X #37/38 in 1960.
