Lot 11
Chinese Polychrome Carved Wood Statue of Guanyin
Description
A Chinese polychrome painted and carved wood Buddhist statue depicting a standing figure of Guanyin that stylistically and texturally suggests a late Ming to mid-Qing dynasty origin between the 17th and 19th centuries, configured with the proper left hand raised holding a ceremonial vase above a diminutive attendant figure standing at the base, featuring an underside showing heavy radial desiccation, deep cross-grain structural shrinkage, age-related split checking, and remnants of old mineral gesso and paint drips consistent with long-term atmospheric exposure though no scientific material testing has been performed to verify its precise production age, represented with an elaborate high coiffure and tiara showing remnants of blue and white pigments over a surface that throughout bears remnants of gesso ground and pigment decoration, dressed in flowing traditional robes and dynamic drapery while standing atop an integral naturalistic rockwork plinth base
Details
Wood, gesso, polychrome pigment
32 3/4 x 10 x 8 1/2 inches

Fair overall condition; extensive weathering and desiccation to the wood substrate, localized stable checking and age-related splitting, widespread flaking, loss, and degradation to the polychrome painted surface layer, and minor structural losses to the fragile extremities of the drapery and headdress
