Seymour Stein is a native New Yorker, entrepreneur and legendary music executive. Starting his career as a teenager, he worked for Billboard magazine and interned at King Records in Cincinnati. In his lengthy career he co-founded Sire Records in 1966 with Richard Gottehrer and worked as Vice President of Warner Bros. Records. Stein is best known for signing Madonna; however, he also signed iconic bands like The Smiths, The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Undertones and Depeche Mode, in which he kick-started a new era of punk/new wave music in the 1970s & ‘80s. In 2005 Stein was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame under the life-time achievement category and in 2016 he was awarded the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
While traveling as a young man through Europe for business, Stein developed an enthusiasm for early 20th century art. Beginning in the 1970s, wherever he went, he sought out antique stores, art fairs, and major auction houses, shipping items back to the home from all over the world. In 2003, Sotheby’s held The Collecting Eye of Seymour Stein, showcasing his interest in “Art Deco furniture and porcelain, metalwork and glassware, European Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite paintings” (Toll, 2018). Other works from his famous collection were also included in Sotheby’s 2018 Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art.
Ceramics from his Asian Art collection were highlights of Capsule’s 2021 Asian Art auction, and upcoming sales will feature additional Fine Art, Furniture, Ceramics and more from his extensive holdings.
