About this Lot
Description
Title: The Texian Grand March for the Piano Forte Respectfully dedicated to Genl. Houston and his brave Companions in Arms, by Edwin Meyrick.
Publication: New York: Published by Firth & Hall, I Franklin Square, 1836. Folio (13 % x 10 inches).
Lithographed title, with integral vignette by Moses Swett of Santa-Anna surrending to General Samuel Houston (verso blank), pp.3-7 music. The final 8th page left blank (as published).
Condition: removed from an album, light damage to upper inner margin [see images], light spotting, toning, particularly to the inner pair of leaves.
Early lithographed 'Texiana' — writing i 2009, Dorothy Slaon noted that 'this lithograph will be included in Dr. Ron Tyler's survey of nineteentwcentury Texas lithographs.' There are apparently three versions of this work, one of which is dated 1835. This is clearly a mistake as the image is based on reports of events which took place after the battle of San Jacinto on 21 April 1836. All three versions show SantaAnna, tipping his cocked hat and wearing military uniform, surrendering his sword to a wounded Sam Houston, half reclining on a bed or cot; with a bandaged right leg. There are three soldiers stand behind, and in the background the folds of a tent.
Eberstadt, Texas 162:542. LC, Texas Centennial Exhibition 96. Streeter 1171B (identifies three different issues with no priority; the present imprint identifies the lithographer as "Swett" above title and monogram AF not present). Streeter Sale 349.
