Parnes’s Dominos puts the concept of Neo-Orientalism on direct display. The easily recognizable colors and image of the Dominos logo beside the brand’s name in Farsi present an immediate, striking collision of Western and Middle Eastern culture. The work represents cultural interaction directly through the scene, as well as through the audience’s engagement with the scene. The presence of a global, yet inherently American, commercial giant like Dominos is a prominent, yet unremarkable, aspect of the scene, on what could be any Persian street corner. That which may initially seem to be incongruous elements naturally coexist. Dominos evidences the sociocultural collision common to Parnes’s work, though it is compounded by the fact that almost any viewer might recognize the collision, whether or not they have ever visited the United States, Domino’s home country, or whether or not they can read Farsi. ~ David Jenkins, J.D.
