Fairfield Porter was an American artist and art critic who produced representational paintings during the Abstract Expressionism movement. Inspired by the lush paint handling of Willem de Kooning and the intimiste depiction's of everyday life by Pierre Bonnard and Édourard Vuillard, Porter crafted incredible works of art simplifying light into shapes of color to create brilliant still lifes and landscapes. Eagle Island, located in the Penobscot Bay along the Maine coast, is near Spruce Head Island where Fairfield Porter spent his summers as a child and continued to do so into his adulthood, referring to it as his “home more than any other place.” Eagle Island Roses is a seemingly more traditional still life by Fairfield Porter, yet under close inspection, it is a gestural painting with fluid action, showcasing Porter’s gentle and intimate perspective.
