About this Lot
Description

SCROPE: or, the lost library a novel of New York and Hartford. Boston: Roberts brothers, 1874. First edition. Original green cloth lettered in gold. Some light shelf wear in feeding extremities, small Nick in front cover, but still a clean, tight and attractive original binding. Tears in margins of first couple pages, not reaching text, else internally good or better. A nice copy of the first American biblio mystery. The author, Frederick Beecher Perkins, 1823–1899, was a librarian at both Connecticut Historical Society and the San Francisco public library, as well as an author.  First American example of a now heavily collected genre— tale of some missing and very rare books including Shakespeare’s first folio, Elliot Indian Bible, etc. Movie rights?
