A Selection From

The Estate of Marshall Johnson III

Marshall Johnson III of Hendersonville, North Carolina lived a life shaped by the American landscape—from Southern California to Illinois, New York, and finally the Blue Ridge Mountains. A successful businessman, Johnson nonetheless found his deepest connection to Door County, Wisconsin, a place he returned to throughout his life.

This affinity for the Midwest was more than personal preference—it was family heritage. Johnson's grandfather was Jens Jensen, the pioneering landscape architect whose collaboration with Frank Lloyd Wright helped define the Prairie style. Jensen's influence on his grandson was profound, shaping a collecting eye drawn to painters who shared his reverence for the Midwestern landscape.

Over decades, Johnson assembled a focused collection of landscape paintings with particular emphasis on the work of Frank Dudley, the celebrated painter of Indiana's dunes.

Frank Dudley's From a Dune Top, originally acquired through a gallery, has remained in the Jensen-Johnson family since Marshall's childhood and was first hung in Jens Jensen's own home. A multigenerational treasure, the painting speaks to a family legacy rooted in the art and landscape of the American heartland.
