[Vernacular photography archive, Hicks Family]. [Gulfport, Mississippi: c. 1930s to 1950s, a few items c. 1960s]. Including two hand-colored portraits, three photo album booklets, and over 100 loose leaf prints (see further description below).

[Hand-Colored Afro-American Portrait]. [Gulfport, Mississippi: c. 1930]. Unbound. Hand-colored photographic portrait. Mounted on stiff card, measuring approximately 8 by 10 inches. Wear at edges, slight scratches, slight bowing. Colors still bright. Penciled initial to verso. Very Good overall.

Original medium close-up studio portrait c. 1930s—heightened with accomplished hand-coloring—featuring an unidentified Afro-American gentleman wearing an ivory fedora, tobacco three-piece suit, white narrow-point shirt, and white necktie.

Stamp and penciled inscriptions to verso. Lightly worn, slightest bowing. Card peeled roughly at margin (image unaffected). Colors still bright. Good or better overall.

Original full studio portrait c. 1930s—heightened with conspicuous hand-coloring—featuring Julia Hicks (b. Gulfport, Mississippi, Jan 1, 1906 - 1968) posed in a floor-length, scalloped bertha collar dress with bishop sleeves, standing beside a woven chair and formal drapery.

[Three vernacular photographic album booklets]. [Gulfport, Mississippi: c. early 1950s]. Three Eastman Kodak “Album Prints” booklets. Measuring approx. 3.75 by 4.5 inches. Clip-bound textured card wrappers, two in blue, one in green, containing 24 original black-and-white gelatin silver photographs (9, 9, and 6 prints, respectively). Red ink stamp to front green wrapper—”SALE STUDIO, Photo Supply and Camera Center. 2513 14th St., Phone 621, Gulfport Miss.” Creased and worn. Very Good overall.

Three vernacular photobooklets containing 24 original black-and-white silver gelatin prints. Two blue wrappered albums with 18 photographs—most chronicling nights at the jukebox deli and grocery operated by the Hicks family in Gulfport. The green wrappered album documents the unusual Mississippi Gulf Coast snowfall of March 1954.
