Howard Finster

American 1916-2001

Howard Finster was an influential American self-taught artist and preacher, widely celebrated for his visionary, folk-art style. Known for his vividly detailed paintings, drawings, and assemblages, Finster often incorporated religious themes, biblical references, and text into his work, creating a unique blend of spirituality and popular culture.

He gained national recognition in the 1980s for designing album covers for artists such as Talking Heads and R.E.M., and his work is held in major museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Finster’s art continues to captivate collectors for its imaginative energy, vibrant color, and outsider perspective.
