Sir Isaac NEWTON (1642-1727). Observations on the Prophecies of Daniel and the Apocalypse of St. John, in Two Parts. London: J. Darby and T. Browne for J. Roberts, J. Tonson [and others], 1733. Quarto (9 5/8 x 7 1/4in; 244 x 184mm). Pp. [i-]iv-vi, [i-ii], 1- 323[-324]. Engraved headpiece to dedication. 18th-century half-sheep over wavy-line patterned paper-backed boards, red Morocco lettering-piece to spine, red speckled edges (rubbed and chipped, upper joint split, lower joint partially split, but cords still holding). Provenance: E. Vernon (early shaved signature to title, two marginal notes, occasional highlighting).

First edition of Newton’s principal published work where his biblical scholarship is to the fore – internally fine and with a binding that is still attractive. In the second of the two notes (p.203) Vernon references Zachary Grey’s ‘An Examination..’ (London: 1736) – a work which was critical of Newton’s ‘Observations’. Babson 224; DSB X, 81; Gray 328; Wallis 328
