While Leon Marcus spent his professional career working as a window cleaner on the Lower East Side, his real passion was for art which he used to express his view on the world around him. When he returned from World War II, he had the opportunity to attend the Art Student League under the instruction of Raphael Soyer, Jack Levine, William Gropper, and Philip Evergood. The influence of these mentors, particularly Levine whom he was closest to, is reflected in Marcus’s work that portrays life and the politics of the time from the view of a social realist. Marcus followed in the footsteps of the Ashcan School and his work stands as a marker of the history of New York and its political and social realities.
