Mahmoud Hamadani is an Iranian-born artist, currently living and creating in New York. His work Untitled (Traces) is a large ink-on-paper work, featured in a larger series entitled Traces. Of the series, Hamandani writes, “I create the works in Traces by blowing ink on paper. The inspiration for the series is best captured by the following poem by Gu Cheng: "Now on my heart's page there is no grid to guide my hand, no character to trace only the moisture the ink blew dew that has dripped from the leaves. To spread it I can't use a writing brush, ecan't use a pen. I can only use my life's gentlest breath to make a single line of marks worth puzzling over.” Untitled is delicate, yet solid. The lines emerge from the bottom of the composition to create veins on the page. The stark contrast pulls the viewers eye down the paper, demonstrating the weight of minimalism, as well as the fragility of life. The traces represent all that is left behind, as the work captures both a moment of the artist’s breath and a moment in which he is in complete control. ~ Evie Adsetts, Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Art Market Studies.
