Architecture is a favorite subject of mine because I like geometry—not the kind you had to do in school, but the visual geometry of a house, barn or other structure. Even for the design of a landscape, such as what I call a “roadscape.”
~ Miriam Dougenis.
Dockside depicts riggins of a boat, and the angles and composition chosen appear to be a sort of portrait of the inanimate object. Dougenis, having lived near the water for decades, has been fascinated with nautical subjects, and she has created a series of studies of sailboats. Many of her compositions related to the Dockside series are almost abstract in their display of shapes and lines, atypical vantage points, flat angles, and coloring choices made by the artist.
