Her Italian Landscape (Isola Tiberina, Rome) is defined by openness and texture. Czinner presents two boats docked along the river with a figure. The natural texture of a tree hangs overhead and leads the eye to the bridge at the top of the composition. A light, safe island with a rustic Italian villa greets the view. The work features a handful of colors, all reminiscent of the intersection of Italian cities and countryside, yet no greenery is featured, unique for such a powerful landscape. The raw copper color of the bridge and buildings particularly evokes the intersection. The white, gray, and neutral tones suggest the enormity of Italy’s rich history, constantly surrounded by its past. The textures call to the ruins that surround contemporary life in Italian cities.
