Description

Joseph SPITHOVER (publisher of photographs, active 1850s-1870s).

[Rome, the Vatican: pair of images of classical Roman statuary: 1. Caesar Augustus and 2. Domitian]. Rome: Spithover, [probably 1860s]. 2 lightly albuminized photographs (9 1/8 x 6 3/8 inches; 232 x 163mm. and smaller), laid onto original publisher’s thin card mount (19 1/8 x 12 1/2in; 492 x 318mm.), ‘Jos. Spithover / Roma”  blindstamp to each mount, one with penciled title to recto of mount. Condition: see images. Provenance: probably Annie C. Clarke (removed from a portfolio, part of a larger collection made by Annie C. Clarke during her tour of Italy, many of the images in the portfolio have her ownership inscription on the verso of the mounts).
