Persian Afshar Rug (19th/20th Century)
Description
An antique Persian Afshar rug of rectangular form featuring a stacked arrangement of two interconnected hexagonal medallions in madder red and ivory on a deep indigo field, each medallion containing geometric floral and cruciform motifs amidst a field densely populated with stylized birds, animal figures, and angular tree-of-life forms, all enclosed within a multi-layered border including a barber-pole inner guard and a main border of repeating serrated leaf and blossom elements, having an aesthetic and construction consistent with late 19th-century nomadic production, measures 3 ft 10 in x 3 ft 3 in.
Details
wool
Provenance
From the Collection of Anne H. Hoy - Author, Professor, and Curator
Condition
The rug displays generalized pile wear, localized areas of thinning to the foundation, and minor losses to the overcast selvedges and end fringes consistent with its age, with a knot density of approximately 80 to 90 knots per square inch as observed on the reverse. Would benefit from a cleaning
