Mindstance is a thought-provoking watercolor from Elicit Justice—A Menagerie on Paper, a series that invites speculation about critical justice issues on a global scale. If this piece rings a bell, it may be because Drawdy depicted the same space in a similar composition in The Art of Justice (2018), which was featured in the first annual Art & Law Auction. Compared to the 2018 artwork, which illustrates a female artist in the center and a small sculpture on one side of the scale, a significant departure in Mindstance is the absence of human figures and artworks. The emptiness strengthens the contrast between the stark, monotone scene and the red words in English and Chinese . . . freedom. Different languages are incorporated to address the concern that rights to freedom are not an issue with limited geographic scope. While the easel and the scale are easy to recognize, Drawdy minimizes the architectural details, almost creating an aura of fragmentation and abstraction. The resulting work—combining a simplified background, symbols, and phrases—witnesses Drawdy’s poignant reflections on the convergence of art and law. Speaking of her passionate exploration in a 2020 interview with Azalea Magazine, Drawdy said, “There are so many issues in our society,...[but] one little action—as small and easy to dismiss as it might be—it makes a difference.” ~ An-Ru Chu, Student at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Master of Arts in Art Market Studies.
