Thomas Sutherland ,British, b.1785, after John Frederick Herring, senior, Memnon: The winner of the Great St Leger at Doncaster, 1825, Hand colored aquatint. Historical note: By Whiskey, dam Manuella by Dick Andrews, grandam Mandane by Pot-8-O's. A bay colt bred by Richard Watt Esq. of Bishop Buron, Yorkshire in 1822 and sold to Lord Darlington after the 1825 St Leger, for £3,500. A reference to this 'Memnon' portrait is made in 'Animals of Sporting' May 1826; Dimensions: sight 15 1/2 x 18, framed 23 1/2 x 27 Property from a Manhattan collector (DSAN174)(MM)
