Lot 184
Two Pre-Columbian Ecuadorian Style Ceramic Figural Vessels
Description
Two ceramic ritual objects rendered in an ancient Ecuadorian style, possibly associated with the Chorrera or Jama-Coaque tradition, consisting of a solid or closed figural sculpture depicting a seated character in an ornate flat headdress resting upon a large spherical base, and a bottle-form vessel depicting a smiling seated figure enveloped in a hooded cowl with hands clasped over its lap, terminating in an open, vertical pouring spout neck at the apex of the head
Details
Low-fired earthenware, red pigment slip, black pigment slip, cream pigment slip
larger: 14 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches
Provenance
From a Private Collection
Condition
Both pieces show surface abrasions, minor chips, and embedded soil deposits consistent with age or simulated burial; the figural sculpture displays visible cracks along the lower extremities where the legs meet the supporting globe element; the companion bottle-form vessel exhibits a severed upper rim neck revealing walls of irregular thickness, an extensive network of structural cracks running down the shoulder and reverse cowl, and a large area of surface loss and material erosion adjacent to the slip-painted section
