Two Victorian Mahogany Banjo Barometers (19th Century)
Description
A pair of 19th-century Victorian banjo wheel barometers featuring shaped mahogany frames, the smaller example configured with a broken-pediment top over a dry/damp dial, a glass-encased spirit thermometer, an convex mirror, a primary weather dial signed "D. Ortelli, Marlborough," and a lower level dial, while the larger example is configured with a molded architectural crest over a dry/damp dial, a long mercury thermometer, a primary weather dial signed "J. Martin, Maidstone," and a lower level dial, with both instruments fitted with brass bezels, steel hands, and manually adjustable setting knobs.
Details
Mahogany wood, mercury-filled glass tubes, brass, glass
Larger: 46 x 14 1/4 x 3 inches
Provenance
From a Central Park West Estate
Condition
Both frames maintain structural integrity with stable joinery; the mahogany housings exhibit natural age patination, light handling scuffs, and several visible hairline cracks to the wood veneers along the narrow neck margins, with the internal mercury tubes remaining filled and mechanically unverified for operational accuracy.
