'May the spirit of the lowly burro enrich your life with simple kindness'. Wm. G. Long.

1969. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED-- (12) ANNOTATED PHOTOS from 1940s hunting lodge and the natural world in Cascade Mtns., Oregon, are tipped-in book with an unusual, humorous legal petition, 'ASSES VS. JACKASSES'-- written by Wm. G. Long (Supreme Court Judge, Retired). Published by Criterion; distributed by Touchstone Press.

WM. G. LONG wrote 'Asses vs. Jackasses' after his "life-time experiences with human jackasses" in divorce and juvenile court cases. Following retirement, Judge Long and his wife travelled over the historical donkey trails in Western U.S. and researched the 6,000 years of history of service by jackasses, burros & donkeys to people. 'Asses vs. Jackasses' is Judge Long's account of the history of Jackass family, and his legal petition to defend the 'lowly burro'. Drawings by Mary Ann Carruthers Akin.

Judge Long gave this copy to his friend, ELMER G. SILL, creator of HARMONY LODGE. It was Sill's idea to make a lean-to shelter for friends to fish and hunt from-- Sill located a good site in the Cascades along Stevens Pass Highway, and built Harmony Lodge with help of unemployed carpenters, plumbers and other craftsmen in the Depression years of early 1930s. In 1938, Harmony Lodge was dedicated.

E.G. SILL's 1940s memorabilia & annotated photos are tipped-in front of book-- Surprise Donkey Party in 1940 (with presentation of the burro, Cleopatra)/ Cleopatra & Mark Anthony in 'corral of romance'/ Cleo & her two day-old son, Caesar/ Natural world at Harmony Lodge/ Maternity hospital for burros & donkeys/ Hand-drawn land plot for Lodge/ Photos of gentlemen at Harmony Lodge/ Photos of Lodge's own jackass, Cleopatra/ Original 1945 birth announcement-drawing for 'Little Caesar' (donkey son of Cleopatra & Mark Anthony)/ Obituary ('the curtain falls') of Cleopatra's death on Dec.7, 1948). Sill tipped-in his remembrances of Harmony Lodge in back of the book-- about the land purchase he made, his friendship with Judge Long, 'distinguished gentlemen' Sill invited to visit the lodge, their idea to gift him a donkey named Cleopatra, and a fold-out map of site.

Very good condition-- 7.25"x 8.5", oblong 12mo., 134 pp. Domestic s&h $15.
