On October 24th Capsule presents Prints, Photography, and Posters. From contemporary pieces to timeless classics, the sale offers a diverse range of work. Exciting artists include Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Joan Miró, Armin Landeck, and Alex Katz. The sale features a handful of prominent collections including work from the Estates of Morley Meldon, Seymour Stein, and Graciela Kartofel.
Morley Melden spent his life supporting the arts and printmaking in particular. In 1991 he was the founding President of The Print Club of New York which was established with a group of 150 passionate print collectors to share the joy of printmaking and collecting, while supporting contemporary printmakers. The club provides numerous educational opportunities, including lectures by artists, curators and conservators, panel discussions, as well as visits to galleries, auction houses, print shops and artists’ studios. Since 1994 the club’s annual Artist Showcase has provided emerging artists with the opportunity to display and showcase their work to Club members, helping to herald them into the artworld making new sales and contacts. An alumni of Princeton University, Morley and his wife established the Morley and Jean Melden Education Fund for Prints and Drawings which aided the next generation of artists and makers by supporting a plethora of arts programming from the Princeton University Museum.
This Armin Landeck drypoint is one of several by the artist in the sale that showcase different views of New York City.
Jessica by Alex Katz was the Print Club's 1994 Presentation Print. This was the third print sent out to club members since the introduction of the Presentation Print with Fred Mershimer's work Passage in 1992, featured below in a 1993 edition.
This lithograph by Karel Appel showcases the artist's use of color and his spontaneous approach which creates energetic and dynamic compositions.
Legendary Sire Records co-founder, Seymour Stein, kick-started the era of punk and new wave music in the 1970s and ‘80s. His collection was formed while traveling as a young businessman throughout Europe. Wherever he went, he sought out antique stores, art fairs, and major auction houses — ultimately forging a vast collection.
Stein's Estate offers an extensive collection of vintage posters from movies to airlines and advertisements. This Imperial Airways poster showcases a cross-section of the airplane, with labels to each feature of the plane.
Thank you to Michael Nentwig for featuring us on Propellor Propaganda.
This eye catching Royal Air Force Recruitment Poster from 1920 is a piece of history. Four British Soldiers stand against a stunning orange sunset with planes overhead seeking to draw young men into enlisting.
This Original Movie Poster features cultural film icon Rodolph Valentino who starred in several well-known silent films including The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Sheik, Blood and Sand, The Eagle, and Young Rajah whose poster is also included in this sale.
Garnering attention from The Graciela Kartofel Collection is this serigraph by Pedro Friedeberg who is featured several times throughout the sale. Graciela is remembered as an art historian, curator, and writer with a decades-long career spent studying Latin American contemporary artists and a deep passion that shone through her personal collecting.
Another popular work from the Kartofel collection is this work by Rodolfo Morales who is known for colorful dreamlike canvases and collages that often incorporated elements of magical realism. Themes of memory and folklore ripple throughout his work.
