Must-See Exhibits in the Neighborhood

Louise Nevelson: Shadow Dance

From January 17th to March 1st at Pace Gallery

This exhibition will offer a rare opportunity to explore the groundbreaking late works of one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century. Curated by Arne Glimcher, this major exhibition presents Nevelson’s iconic black and white monochromatic sculptures alongside her dynamic collages from the 1970s and 1980s, some never before exhibited. These pieces reveal a shift in her artistic language, introducing diagonal elements that bring a new energy to her compositions while maintaining her signature exploration of materiality, shape, and shadow. This exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in modern abstraction and the evolution of Nevelson's profound artistic vision.

Prayer / Pattern / Prayer

Until February 15th at Morgan Lehman Gallery

This captivating exhibition just down the hall from us, brings together eight artists — Miguel Arzabe, Myles Bennett, Lehuauakea, Beck Lowry, Ingrid Yi-Chen Lu, Lilian Shtereva, Richard Tinkler, and Aya Uekawa — who explore the timeless language of pattern. Through diverse cultural and material approaches, these artists use pattern as a form of ritual and meditation, echoing ancient practices that span from prehistoric cave art to contemporary design. The show highlights the profound connection between repetition, rhythm, and spirituality, offering viewers a space to reflect on the universal and transcendent power of pattern in art and life.

Wijnanda Deroo

Out on the Street: The Dining Sheds & Empty Streets of New York, 2020-2024

Until February 15th at Deborah Bell Photographs

Deborah Bell Photographs, another fantastic gallery located just down the hall from Capsule, presents two compelling series of color photographs by Dutch photographer Wijnanda Deroo. These works capture the evolving urban landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic. Known for her carefully composed interior images devoid of people, Deroo turns her lens to New York’s dining sheds and empty streets, documenting a city transformed. Her work reflects both the physical structures and the atmosphere of a moment in flux — spaces shaped by personal history, resilience, and cultural shifts. This exhibition offers a poignant meditation on urban change and the silent presence of human life, making it a must-see for those interested in photography, history, and the visual storytelling of New York City.
