Must-See Exhibits in the Neighborhood

Carmen Herrera: The Paris Years, 1948-1953

Until August 1st at Lisson Gallery

Visitors should not miss this rare look at a formative period in Carmen Herrera’s career, when she shifted from gestural abstraction to the bold geometric style that would define her work. Immersed in postwar Paris, Herrera absorbed key modernist influences while pioneering techniques like shaped canvases and early acrylic use. Featuring major works such as Way, Thrust, and Early Dynasty, this exhibition reveals a young artist forging a distinct visual language—laying the foundation for seven decades of minimalist innovation.

William De Kooning - Endless Painting

Until June 14th at Gagosian

In Gagosian’s newly renovated Chelsea space, this exhibits offers an opportunity to experience the full scope of de Kooning’s restless innovation, tracing his evolution from early figuration to the fluid abstractions of his later years. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the exhibition reveals how de Kooning continuously reworked his canvases, developing a dynamic visual language that challenged traditional notions of completion in painting. With major works on loan from MoMA and the Guggenheim, alongside rarely seen sculptures, the show captures the energy, complexity, and enduring influence of an artist who redefined the possibilities of postwar art.

From the Circle to the Star - Marco A. Castillo

Until June 5th at Nara Roesler

Marco A. Castillo’s first solo exhibition in the city offers a compelling introduction to his practice that blends sculpture, design, and architecture with Cuban history and politics. Drawing on the legacy of mid-20th-century Cuban modernism and Soviet-era aesthetics, Castillo reinterprets traditional materials like mahogany and rattan into works that are both functional and symbolic. Through geometric forms and nuanced references, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the intersections of art, design, and ideology. It is a must-see for those interested in Latin American modernism, political art, and the evolution of cultural identity.
