The cream of the crop.
On June 15th, Capsule presents American and European Art, a sale of figurative work, landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes, and marine paintings from 19th and 20th century artists. The auction spans Realist, Barbizon, Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Fauvist works from artists such as Louis Valtat, Marc Chagall, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Armand Guillaumin, Louis Lozowick and sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye. Live exhibition hours will be held June 12-14, 11am-3pm, and by appointment at our Chelsea gallery.
A major highlight of the sale is a beautiful floral still-life by French painter Louis Valtat, who exhibited with the Fauves in the famous 1906 Salon d’Automne. Cruche aux Anémones, painted in 1926 is an excellent example of the artist’s impressionistic style.
In his Paris studio in the 1880’s, Impressionist painter Armand Guillaumin met and developed relationships with some of the most influential artists of the time including Van Gogh, Seurat, and Gauguin. Péniches sur la Seine à Charrenton, which he painted in the mid 1880’s, is a premier example of Guillaumin’s ability to capture the transient effects of light and color and is an exciting offering in the sale.
A rare lithograph by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir is included in the sale Pinning the Hat (Le Chapeau Épinglé). Although highly regarded for his contributions to the impressionist movement, Pierre-Auguste Renoir eventually pulled away from multicolored strokes to pursue a more disciplined and formal technique. Young women, like the ones featured in this work, were a popular subject for him.
La Caverne des Nymphes (1961) by Marc Chagall is an exquisite color lithograph from "Daphins et Chloe" Tériade Éditeur, Paris France from an unsigned edition of 250 impressions without margins and is accompanied by a COA. This dream in blue captures the whimsical nature of Chagall’s work.
A gilt bronze sculpture by Antoine-Louis Barye is a compelling addition to the sale. Theseus and the Minotaur stand off in an energetic pose. A master of anatomical form, Barye was well-known for his animal sculptures. This work eloquently displays his skill in both human and animal form. F Barbedienne Fondeur is inscribed on the base of the sculpture with a gold collection F. Barbedienne Paris pastille.
