Hans Hofmann (1880–1966) was a German-born American painter revered for his contributions to the development of Abstract Expressionism. Hofman is famously remembered as both a quintessential postwar artist and as a teacher to generations of artists both in Germany and the United States. His paintings are known for their bold and vibrant color use and spatial illusionism. Hofman has had shows at Peggy Guggenheim’s Art of This Century, Kootz Gallery, as well as major retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art and Museum of Modern Art. He also has work in permanent collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Modern, Germanisches National Museum, National Gallery of Art, and Art Institute of Chicago.
