Is it Humpty Dumpty or a bust of a person looking back at the viewer in awe? The organic shape and the evocative, yet simplistic, expression captured in this statue are characteristics of Alexander Ney’s work in clay media. Here, the artist’s decision to pair the small statue with a rare marble base, instead of a more popular wooden pedestal, begs the viewer to do a double take. Is this to merit a more illustrious perch? Perhaps the work is not as simple as the first impression might suggest.
