Jimmy Valdez Osaku weaves together rich, sanguine color and strategic depth in Samurai, Serie: Algo mas que totems, evoking reverence for the powerful image and beckoning viewers to be guided by their senses. The painting's central forms appear swift and agile from the crimson and cream blends – while the shadowy background hints at mysteries and challenges awaiting the bold figures. The figures, taken in conjunction with the work's title, possibly represent the discipline, sacrifice, and virtue of the samurai beyond its role as a cultural totem; however, Osaku's transcendent approach leaves viewers with fields of space in which to form their own interpretations. The work's composition, quasi-sculptural in nature, alludes to the artist's exceptional range as a painter, writer, sculptor, and mixed media creator. In this work, Osaku invites audiences to perceive things without actually seeing them; to reflect on the painting's forms and intimations without actually identifying them; and to internalize the colors and sensations of the commanding figures without actually knowing them. ~ Tess Bonoli, Advisory Board Member, Center for Art Law.
