[EVANS Family, compilors] – [Wales, Algeria, south of France, Spainand Portugal] an album of annotated photographs, titled ‘Four Reminiscences of Past Time. 1. Montgomery District. 2. Algiers. 3. Marseilles. 4. Portugal’, dated ‘Sep. 4th 1880 [but with images from 1872 and possibly earlier]. Quarto (10 7/8 x 9 inches; 277 x 228mm). 31 card leaves, interleaved with thin paper. The card leaves mounted (recto only) with 55 albumen print photographs (most carte-de-visite size: 24 of locations in Wales; 10 of Algeria; 6 of Marseilles, 1 of Malaga, 14 of Portugal), all well-presented within red-ruled ink borders with locations in manuscript in red and black, no photographers’ names given, but one image at least (“Vaenor Hall near Berriew” [aka Vaynor Park] ) was photographed by ‘Mr. Owen’ (according to a book published in 1872). Original velvet-backed damascened cloth over beveled-edged boards, hand-embroidered armorial crest panel to upper cover and dated monogram to the lower, gilt metal clasp with engraved date ‘Sep 4th / 1880”). (extremities and applied panels worn). Provenance: Evans family (binding).
A better than usual selection with quite early images – in some case of buildings that have since been demolished. The Welsh images are a mixture of large houses and churches (Marrington Hall, Chirbury; Lymore Hall Montgomery; Garth, near Welshpool and “Vaenor Hall near Berriew” [aka Vaynor Park ]) allied with street scenes in some of the associated small towns and villages. The rest are the more usual topographical views of Algiers, etc.
