[Jean Baptiste LOUVET de Couvray (1760-1797)]

Love and Patriotism ! or, The Extraordinary Adventures of M. Duportail, Late Major-General in the Armies of the United States. Interspersed with many surprising incidents in the life of the late Count Pulaski. Philadelphia: printed by Carey & Markland, 1797. 12mo bound in sixes ( 6 5/8 x 4 inches; 163 x 101mm). Pp. [1-]5-120. (Ownership inscriptions torn away from the upper blank margin of the title and following leaf – a loss of two strips about ½ inch wide, clean tear to pp. 5/6, pp.93/94 with old tear to text area [no loss], spotted and toned throughout). Old marbled sheep (worn, spine defective [see images]). Provenance: H.F. Jones (signature on the page following the title and the margin of page 30).

First edition thus. Basically, a  translation of a portion of the author's "Chevalier de Faublas", but re-worked slightly to suit the American market. Evans 32388; Howes L518; Sabin 42357.
